Instructor: Karen L. Messick Workshop Limit: 10 people
Join Karen L. Messick on a photographic adventure around the beautiful gardens and the historic mansion of Cylburn. Cylburn Arboretum is a 207 acre urban park administered by the Horticultural Division of the Baltimore City Dept of Recreation and Parks. It is located within the city limits, but has the feeling of an estate set in the rolling countryside.
In 1863 Jesse Tyson, a Baltimore businessman and importer, began construction of Cylburn Mansion as a summer home for his mother and himself. The Mansion is a luxurious post-Civil War dwelling, built of gneiss from Tyson's quarries at Bare Hills, Maryland, with mansard roof, a tower and a cupola of Italianate design.
Cylburn features a variety of formal gardens. The Julie Smith Garden, the Three Sisters Garden and Nathan’s Gardens were all designed to offer blooming flowers of some sort from mid April until January. The All America Selections garden, the Vegetable garden, and the Heritage Rose Garden are located behind the Mansion. Several Memorial gardens, the Butterfly garden, and the Formal garden, complement the areas around the Mansion.
Wildflowers at Cylburn delight the visitor–especially in spring time. Trails wind around the bog and through the woodlands, where ornamental grasses, rare trees, native plants, ferns, and wildflowers may be studied and photographed.
Learn the best techniques to use for landscape and macro photography, how to use the aperture, the shutter speed, and the ISO for proper exposure. Gain a better understanding of histograms, white balance settings and the principles of image design. Practice making creative images using such techniques as swipes and multiple exposures.
