Spend a day working with one of the most elegant file management tools, the Lightroom Library. The Library is the heart and soul of Lightroom. Understanding it's power and flexibility is the key to success with the program.

You will learn how to properly import, apply metadata, organize, keyword, search, collect, and export your files for any purpose.  Lightroom has some key concepts that will be explained in detail, as well as procedures for maintaining the catalog.

The class will provide in-depth coverage, not just an overview, and will be hands on as you work on your laptop with your files. There are a lot of hidden gems within the Library that this class will illuminate.

We will also touch on some of Lightroom's other modules including Slide and Print.

Participants need to bring their laptop computer loaded with Lightroom 2.2 or higher to class. If you do not already own Lightroom 2, a fully functional trial can be downloaded at www.adobe.com.

All work done in class will be included in one's catalog once the software is purchased. If you have version 1, you should upgrade to benefit from the improvements.

    Instructor: Eliot Cohen
    Class Limit: 15 people

The most flexible way to capture information in a digital camera is in the RAW file format. It allows photographers to make better decisions about exposure, contrast, white balance and sharpness long after the file has been recorded in the camera. While viewing the image on screen and using a histogram for precise evaluation, photographers can optimize their files before they begin the final edits in Photoshop.

This is a hands-on workshop taught on students own laptops with either Lightroom 2 or Adobe Camera RAW installed. (Adobe Camera RAW is included in Photoshop CS3, CS4, and Photoshop Elements 4 -7). Please check that you have the most current udated versions of your software. Everyone will be given the same images to work with for consistency.

    Topics Covered:
    • How best to handle image capture in RAW format
    • The Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom workspace and  tools
    • Step by step processing of RAW files
    • Processing multiple files simultaneously
    • Keeping track of metadata

Following a systematic approach, one will learn how to optimize RAW files individually, as well as process multiple files as a group. This allows one who might be wary of RAW because of the additional processing steps to work efficiently and benefit from the use of RAW files.

Pre-requisites: Basic familiarity with the Lightroom 2 or Adobe Photoshop or Elements workspace is a must.
If you have some awareness of how to correct color and adjust sharpness in Photoshop or Elements it will be helpful. Some background information will be provided in class.

    What to Bring:
You are welcome to bring some of your RAW files on a CD or Jump drive. Toward the end of the class there may be time to edit your own.

Photograph the interesting statues and waterfalls of the FDR Memorial, then from the rim of the Tidal Basin, capture the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial reflected in the water and framed by cherry blossoms. We’ll take a short walk to the little-known George Mason Memorial with its beautiful bed of flowers and end up at the Jefferson Memorial. The cherry blossoms that line the Tidal Basin make beautiful frames for any picture you take.  And as a special treat, we’ll meet and photograph The Lady of the Blossoms, a 90-year old tree that looks like a woman offering a basket of blossoms to the Washington Monument!

At each point on this safari, techniques of composition, exposure and lighting will be discussed.

Any camera will do, from simple disposable film camera to complex digital. But for best results a wide angle lens equivalent to about 28 mm in 35 mm format, a circular polarizing filter, and a telephoto of at least 100mm. Because of the crowds, tripods are not recommended.

Have you have ever wanted highlights in the sky and details in the shadows to look their best in the same image? HDR is a new technique that allows photographers to overcome exposure and dynamic range issues and build images with incredible range and detail.

This class is broken down into 3 sections; 2 hours lecture and camera set up, 2 hours shooting (and lunch), and 2 hours processing the images.

    Lecture and Demonstration:

    The class starts with an overview of what HDR is and how it can be used to overcome exposure and dynamic range issues. Also discussed are;

    • Equipment options
    • How to set up the camera
    • How to bracket exposures
    • Where to start the exposure
    • Different shooting methods
    • Using and not using a tripod
    • How to get the desire look of the final image

    Shooting:
The group will head out and photograph around Georgetown capturing images to be used in the processing session.  For those that would like, there will be one-on-one help for shooting and setting exposures as well as working with detailed camera functions.

    Processing:
Both Photomatix Pro and Photoshop will be used to demonstrate different methods in generating the HDR image. Each student will have their own computer station and will merge their images into an HDR environment. Tone mapping, the important role it plays and options the photographer has when tone mapping his images will be discussed.

    What to Bring:
A digital SLR camera with a large memory card (4GB minimum) a tripod, a cable release or wireless remote, a card reader or the download cable for the camera, and either a portable hard drive, or a jump drive with at least 4GB of storage space for the finished files.

After giving you an orientation on the basic techniques of nighttime photography, Washington Photo Safari director E. David Luria will take you to the most photogenic areas on the western end of the National Mall.

This safari begins at the new World War II Memorial, with its beautifully illuminated ornate fountains and columns framing the nearby spotlit Washington Monument in that “magic hour” of deep-blue twilight.  Then we walk along the picturesque Reflecting Pool on our way to the  extraordinary Korean War Memorial with its  illuminated, fear-filled faces of men in combat,  and then to  the awesome Lincoln Memorial  with its majestic statue of President Lincoln. Then we go to the poignant Vietnam Women’s Memorial, the powerful Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and we end up at the whimsical Albert Einstein Memorial . At each location on this 2.5-hour safari, David reviews white balance settings for digital cameras and filter usage for film cameras in nighttime shooting, how to shoot at night WITHOUT using a flash, and how to achieve interesting composition with close-up detail that truly brings out the meaning of each memorial and statue. These memorials photograph MUCH better at night than in the daytime, and this safari will help you achieve really beautiful, postcard-quality images of the nation’s capital. Great for black and white photography too!

    What to Bring:
Your camera along with memory cards or film and extra batteries. A small flashlight can be helpful as well.  A STURDY tripod is a must!

This is a hands-on workshop taught on students own laptop with either Lightroom 2 or Adobe Camera RAW installed. (Adobe Camera RAW is included in Photoshop CS3, CS4, Photoshop Elements 4-7).  Everyone will be given the same images to work with for consistency.

    Topics Covered:
    • How best to handle image capture in RAW format
    • The Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom workspace and tools."
    • Step by step processing of RAW files
    • Processing multiple files simultaneously
    • Keeping track of metadata

Following a systematic approach, one will learn how to optimize RAW files individually, as well as processing multiple files as a group.

    Free parking at this location.

It’s become almost a cliché to say that light is the raw material to photography, but it is that fundamental.

Light illuminates the world and sculpts the faces, objects and scenes we capture with our cameras. But there is a difference between pointing a light at something and lighting it; only after we master exposure control can we begin to interpret, manipulate, modify and eventually design different patterns and qualities of light.

This workshop covers the use of single and multiple Speedlights (Nikon & Canon) in different environments. It will cover a broad area of topics and include plenty of time for questions about the user's own equipment.

Topics include infrared and radio synching, TTL and manual exposures and the use of various light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes, umbrellas and domes. The workshop will build on your understanding of exposure (including the difference between ambient and flash exposure) and contrast control (lighting ratios). You will learn to recognize and reproduce hard and soft light using natural (existing) light, through the use of both Nikon and Canon Speedlight equipment.

This is a "hands-on" workshop. Students must bring a DSLR camera, a memory card and at least one speedlight, either Nikon or Canon. The rest of the equipment will be provided.

Lecture and workshop will breakout as follows:

    • Introduction to Speedlight
    • Understanding of TTL settings & exposure
    • Light modification devices and their use
    • Multiple off-camera flash setup
    • Basic through advanced three-light portrait setups

This is an intermediate level class. Students should have a good understanding of photography and exposure basics. Some knowledge of flash is helpful but not required.

There is free street parking in Georgetown on Sundays.

With careful planning while you keep your day job, you CAN turn your hobby and your love of photography into a lucrative profession. Many people facing retirement, reduced pensions or job layoffs have successfully become full-time or part-time photographers, earning significant income with their photo skills.

This Safari, taught by Washington Photo Safari founder and director E. David Luria, will explore ways to make a successful transition into photography as a profession, looking at such options as shooting for stock, events, weddings, child portraits, sports, architecture, real estate, restaurants, food, pets, sailboats, landscapes, and lawyers.

David will discuss such topics as: how do you get educated in photography? Once you get to be a GOOD photographer, how can you market your skills? How do you set prices for your work? Where can you go for further training in photography while holding down your day job? How do you get published? How do you build a photo portfolio? Who are the potential clients in your own neighborhood and community? Which areas of photography have the greatest income potential? And more.

Participants will also be encouraged to explore areas of photography with which they are NOT familiar as possible options for career work.

The Van Ness UDC Metro stop on the Red line is just 3 blocks from the Safari site. There is also street parking in the area.

Join the Photography Underground by riding the rails on this 3-hour photo safari through the Yellow and Red Lines of the Washington METRO System. Photograph the trains coming into the stations, passing scenes from moving trains, and the cavernous, vaulting ceilings in many of the stations. Capture the interesting architecture and the colorful artwork at Gallery Place, the artistically intersecting tunnels at Metro Center, the dramatic view from the escalator at Dupont Circle, and landmark views from the outdoor stations like National Airport.

At each point on the safari the instructor will provide tips on exposure, composition and setting white balance and more.

No tripods are allowed on this safari. You will learn how to photograph in low-light without a flash or tripod, which means high-speed film, or ISO setting on the digital camera. A 50 mm F1.4 or F1.8 lens is VERY useful in the low light situations you will encounter on this safari. If you REALLY want to have fun, bring or rent a 10mm Fish-Eye lens for those BIG WIDE tunnel shots!

Special permission has been given by METRO for this safari, station masters and Metro police will be aware of our presence.

    Instructor: Vincent Ricardel

    Class Limit: 12 people

This class will impart a thorough understanding of the four key types of studio lighting for portraits: Broad lighting, Short lighting, Rembrandt Lighting and Butterfly Lighting. The effects of each of these will be discussed and demonstrated in a professional studio environment.

To help develop their style as a photographer, each student will use these applications and produce portraits of a model and have their work critiqued.

This is an intermediate level class. Some prior knowledge of studio lighting is required.

Students should bring a digital camera with a variable zoom lens (35-70mm) and/ or portrait lens (50mm, 85mm etc), a 4GB (minimum) memory card, a light meter, and extra batteries.

This class is located in Georgetown at the Center for Digital Imaging Arts at Boston University.

There is free street parking in Georgetown on Sundays.

    Instructor: Karen L. Messick
    Workshop Limit: 10 people

Gardens and nature lovers delight. Capture beautiful shots and learn how to use available light effectively in flower and nature photography.

Karen L. Messick leads this photography workshop at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens in Washington DC on Friday, July 16 from 7:00-11:00 AM. Learn how to capture beautiful images and get the best possible results from your photo equipment. You’ll enjoy photographing dew laden lotus blossoms, colorful water lilies, and many natural subjects, such as Great Blue Herons and dragon flies.

The following equipment is recommended: a tripod, a telephoto/zoom lens in the 300mm range, a macro lens or a lens with macro capability to get close-ups of blooms, a polarizing filter, and a reflector to bounce light into the flowers.

Wear suitable footwear (since it’s wet, sandals aren’t recommended), a hat, long sleeve shirt, long pants and bug spray.

We will meet at the Visitor Center just inside the gardens.

For more information about the park visit, http://www.nps.gov/keaq/
