    Instructor: E. David Luria
    Limit: 15 People

If you like to get up REAL early, this safari is for YOU!   The very best time of day to photograph the Lincoln Memorial is at dawn, when the rising sun paints the memorial in a golden light, and the sun is low enough to penetrate the roof line and light up Mr. Lincoln’s statue.

Professional architectural photographer E. David Luria, director of Washington Photo Safari, conducts this workshop that teaches amateur photographers how to capture the early morning light on the building and the statue, and how to frame the view of the rising sun in the columns of the Lincoln Memorial.

Working without flash or tripods, participants will be taught techniques of exposure, composition, lighting and color filtration to get the most dramatic photographs of this beautiful national treasure.  The early morning light also looks great as we photograph the nearby Reflecting Pool, the Korean War Veterans Memorial, the Vietnam Women’s Memorial, and the friendly Albert Einstein Memorial. NO TRIPODS are allowed on this safari!

    Instructor: E. David Luria
    Safari Limit: 15 people

After giving you an orientation on the basic techniques of nighttime photography, Washington Photo Safari director E. David Luria will take you to the most photogenic areas on the western end of the National Mall.

This safari begins at the new World War II Memorial, with its beautifully illuminated ornate fountains and columns framing the nearby spotlit Washington Monument in that “magic hour” of deep-blue twilight.

Then we walk along the picturesque Reflecting Pool on our way to the  extraordinary Korean War Memorial with its  illuminated, fear-filled faces of men in combat,  and then to  the awesome Lincoln Memorial  with its majestic statue of President Lincoln. Then we go to the poignant Vietnam Women’s Memorial, the powerful Vietnam Veterans Memorial, and we end up at the whimsical Albert Einstein Memorial . At each location on this safari, David reviews white balance settings for digital cameras and filter usage for film cameras in nighttime shooting, how to shoot at night WITHOUT using a flash, and how to achieve interesting composition with close-up detail that truly brings out the meaning of each memorial and statue. These memorials photograph MUCH better at night than in the daytime, and this safari will help you achieve really beautiful, postcard-quality images of the nation’s capital. Great for black and white photography too!

    What to Bring:
Your camera along with memory cards or film and extra batteries. A small flashlight can be helpful as well.  A STURDY tripod is a must!

This safari begins at the WW II Memorial. The Smithsonian Metro stop is about ½ to ¾ mile walk from the starting site of this Safari. There is parking available after the 6:30 rush hour.

Class Cancellation Policy: Full credit towards another class will be awarded if cancellation notice is given more than 5 business days from the scheduled class. If there is no cancellation notice, or if it is given 5 business days or less prior to the scheduled class, no credit or refund will be given. Changes to reschedule a class will incur the full charge if notice is given less than 5 business days prior to the originally scheduled class.

With careful planning while you keep your day job, you CAN turn your hobby and your love of photography into a lucrative profession. Many people facing retirement, reduced pensions or job layoffs have successfully become full-time or part-time photographers, earning significant income with their photo skills.

This Safari, taught by Washington Photo Safari founder and director E. David Luria, will explore ways to make a successful transition into photography as a profession, looking at such options as shooting for stock, events, weddings, child portraits, sports, architecture, real estate, restaurants, food, pets, sailboats, landscapes, and lawyers.

David will discuss such topics as: how do you get educated in photography? Once you get to be a GOOD photographer, how can you market your skills? How do you set prices for your work? Where can you go for further training in photography while holding down your day job? How do you get published? How do you build a photo portfolio? Who are the potential clients in your own neighborhood and community? Which areas of photography have the greatest income potential? And more.

Participants will also be encouraged to explore areas of photography with which they are NOT familiar as possible options for career work.

The Van Ness UDC Metro stop on the Red line is just 3 blocks from the Safari site. There is also street parking in the area.

One of Washington’s least known but most beautiful attractions is the National Building Museum, formerly known as the Pension Building. Built in the late 19th century as a workplace for the hundreds of clerks who wrote out pension checks for the Civil War veterans, the National Building Museum boasts a huge 12-story atrium supported by massive faux marble columns, creating a magnificent space often used for Presidential inaugurations.

This workshop on exterior and interior architectural photography, led by architectural photographer E. David Luria  begins outside in Judiciary Square, where we photograph the impressive National Law Enforcement Memorial with the Museum as a backdrop. Then we photograph the impressive exterior of the Museum before going inside to photograph the architecturally unique interior from  the upper floors. We will also enjoy the opportunity to photograph the spectacular new exhibit of famous buildings reproduced in Lego bricks.

You will learn how to hold the camera for maximum picture sharpness; use selective focus to determine the subject of each picture using focus hold; frame your subject using available flowers, trees, bushes and doorways; keep your vertical lines as straight as possible for professional photos; take pleasing outdoor portraits in bright sunshine and in shade; use the fill-flash and cancel-flash features of your camera; take pictures inside of large interior spaces without using a flash; take close-up pictures of flowers and statues; put strong composition lines and balance into your pictures and control depth-of-field with aperture priority settings.

Any camera will do, from a point and shoot to acomplex digital SLR. For best results, bring a wide angle lens equivalent to about 28 mm (in 35 mm format), a circular polarizing filter, a telephoto of at least 100mm, and enough digital media and batteries for about 72 exposures. DON'T LEAVE ANY OF YOUR LENSES AT HOME! YOU WILL REGRET NOT HAVING THE LENS YOU LEFT BEHIND! You should also learn how to put your digital photos into black and white. NO TRIPODS ARE ALLOWED ON THIS ITINERARY!

Don’t own a camera? Interested in trying a new lens? Considering upgrading your current equipment? No problem! The Tyson’s and E. Street Penn Camera stores have a great selection of photography gear for rent and applies 50% of the rental fee towards the purchase price if you buy it within 30 days. Reservation and deposit is required. Limited availability.

The most flexible way to capture information in a digital camera is in the RAW file format. It allows photographers to make better decisions about exposure, contrast, white balance and sharpness long after the file has been recorded in the camera. While viewing the image on screen and using a histogram for precise evaluation, photographers can optimize their files before they begin the final edits in Photoshop.

This is a hands-on workshop taught on students own laptops with either Lightroom 3 or Adobe Camera RAW installed. (Adobe Camera RAW is included in Photoshop CS3, CS4, & CS5 and Photoshop Elements 4 -8). Please check that you have the most current udated versions of your software. Everyone will be given the same images to work with for consistency.

    Topics Covered:
    • How best to handle image capture in RAW format
    • The Adobe Camera RAW and Lightroom workspace and  tools
    • Step by step processing of RAW files
    • Processing multiple files simultaneously
    • Keeping track of metadata

Following a systematic approach, one will learn how to optimize RAW files individually, as well as process multiple files as a group. This allows one who might be wary of RAW because of the additional processing steps to work efficiently and benefit from the use of RAW files.

Pre-requisites: Basic familiarity with the Lightroom 3 or Adobe Photoshop or Elements workspace is a must.
If you have some awareness of how to correct color and adjust sharpness in Photoshop or Elements it will be helpful. Some background information will be provided in class.

    What to Bring:
You are welcome to bring some of your RAW files on a CD or Jump drive. Toward the end of the class there may be time to edit your own.

Class Cancellation Policy: Full credit towards another class will be awarded if cancellation notice is given more than 5 business days from the scheduled class. Here is your chance to take picture perfect postcard images by capturing that traditional postcard-view of the three famous monuments – the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, and the Capitol, all neatly aligned in your viewfinder with the full moon right above them. We will do this from the vantage-point of the Netherlands Carillon, right next to the Iwo Jima Memorial in Arlington VA.

Professional architectural photographer E. This class is for photographers who have a solid understanding of digital workflow as well as layer basics and want to learn more effective methods of preparing their files. Throughout the class we will be working with adjustment layers and masks, the key elements to flexibility and precision in the digital darkroom. You will learn how to make adjustments that can be tweaked as needed and selectively brushed-in for precise control.

We will introduce curves, the most accurate way to edit tone and color - a much more sophisticated option than using the Shadow/Highlight dialog box, create effective black and white conversions, and learn selective sharpening techniques that will enhance the details in your images. Mastering these techniques will make your images look more professional and allow you to work with greater efficiency in Photoshop.

Both Photoshop and Elements users who have completed the introductory classes or who have knowledge of the items covered in those classes are suited for this class. If you haven’t attended the beginner class but are familiar with the Photoshop workspace and the basic tools, please email penntraining@penncamera.com to discuss attending.

    Instructor: E. David Luria
    Safari Limit: 15 people

Here is your opportunity to AVOID the springtime crowds and enjoy Washington DC’s Tidal Basin in the mild weather of early November on a photo safari led by the man who knows where all the best shots are: architectural photographer E. David Luria, official photographer of the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival.

On this 2½ hour walking excursion, Mr. Luria will review techniques on travel photography and lead you to the best views of the memorials framed by red and orange fall foliage around the Tidal Basin. Learn tips on exposure, composition, lighting, and making full use of all of the features that your camera offers.

Through your cameras viewfinder you’ll see Washington DC's Tidal Basin ringed in the vibrant colors of Autumn: deep red, gold, pink, orange, purple, and brown. Capture great shots by framing the Washington Monument or the Jefferson Memorial in a circle of fiery red leaves, or zooming in on a huge cherry tree with its colorful branches arching over the pathway and touching the surface of the water.

We'll start at the paddleboat rental station and make our way clockwise along the Tidal Basin path with the morning sun behind us shining on the gorgeous red trees across the Tidal Basin. We'll enjoy great views of the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial all framed in multi-colored cherry blossoms, AND IT IS ONLY PENN CAMERA CLIENTS WHO GET AN EXCLUSIVE PEAK AT OUR SECRET SPOT: “OUR LADY OF THE BLOSSOMS CHERRY TREE!"

Don't miss this opportunity to AVOID the springtime crowds at the Cherry Trees and enjoy Washington DC’s Tidal Basin in the mild weather of early November!

Any camera will do, from simple disposable film camera to complex digital. We stress that good pictures are taken by photographers, not by cameras. But for best results we suggest you bring a wide angle lens equivalent to about 28 mm in 35 mm format, a circular polarizing filter, a telephoto of at least 100mm, and enough film or digital media and batteries for about 72 exposures, 200 or 400 speed.

It’s become almost a cliché to say that light is the raw material to photography, but it is that fundamental.

Light illuminates the world and sculpts the faces, objects and scenes we capture with our cameras. But there is a difference between pointing a light at something and lighting it; only after we master exposure control can we begin to interpret, manipulate, modify and eventually design different patterns and qualities of light.

This workshop covers the use of single and multiple Nikon Speedlights in different environments. It will cover a broad area of topics and include plenty of time for questions about the user's own equipment.

Topics include TTL and manual exposures, multiple speedlight syncing through Nikon Creative Lighting System (CLS), and the use of various light modifiers such as umbrellas, softboxes and domes. The workshop will build on your understanding of exposure (including the difference between ambient and flash exposure) and contrast control (lighting ratios). You will learn to recognize and reproduce hard and soft light through the use of Nikon Speedlight equipment.

This is a "hands-on" workshop. Students must bring a DSLR camera, a memory card and at least one Nikon speedlight. The rest of the equipment will be provided.

Lecture and workshop will breakout as follows:

        * Introduction to Speedlight
        * Understanding of TTL settings & exposure
        * Light modification devices and their use
        * Multiple off-camera flash setup with Nikon CLS
        * Basic through advanced three-light portrait setups

This is an intermediate level class. Students should have a good understanding of photography and exposure basics. Some knowledge of flash is helpful but not required.

There is free street parking in Georgetown on Sundays.

David Luria will coach you in single-exposure and double-exposure techniques of twilight and moonlight photography on this safari, timed to coincide with the sunset and the full Hunter's Moon rising at 66 degrees east of north, just above the Old Post Office. Afterwards, you will learn dramatic night-time shooting techniques for capturing the Marine Corps Memorial soldiers framed against the rising moon while shooting in Manual mode and adjusting your white balance.

Getting properly exposed pictures of the moon at night is tricky, this safari will show you how to do it right! For DSLR or film SLR users with multiple exposure capabilities in their cameras (check your manual!), Mr. Luria will demonstrate how to MOVE the moon from its Old Post Office location right in your camera to that spot where you want it, just to the left of the Washington Monument!  REGISTER EARLY, THIS IS A POPULAR SAFARI

TRIPODS ARE A MUST FOR THIS SAFARI!

Spend a day working with one of the most elegant file management tools, the Lightroom Library. The Library is the heart and soul of Lightroom. Understanding it's power and flexibility is the key to success with the program.

You will learn how to properly import, apply metadata, organize, keyword, search, collect, and export your files for any purpose.  Lightroom has some key concepts that will be explained in detail, as well as procedures for maintaining the catalog.

The class will provide in-depth coverage, not just an overview, and will be hands on as you work on your laptop with your files. There are a lot of hidden gems within the Library that this class will illuminate.

We will also touch on some of Lightroom's other modules including Slide and Print.

Participants need to bring their laptop computer loaded with Lightroom 3 to class. If you do not already own Lightroom 3, a fully functional trial can be downloaded at www.adobe.com.

The Mormon Temple in Kensington, MD puts on a spectacular display of lights during the holiday season, with trees, bushes, reindeer, crèches, and other Biblical scenes, some with live models. These lights and the unique architecture of the Temple itself at night make for great photography.

Our shooting itinerary will take us to all the lighted displays put out by the Mormon Church each year in December. The bushes are decorated with 300,000 lights, and the Temple itself is awash in a soft white light, providing a great opportunity to practice shooting at night with a tripod. Washington's own professional architectural photographer, E. David Luria, provides training in night time composition and shooting without flash while explaining the best white balance settings to use under these conditions.

This safari is a must to add to your holiday memories and for creating holiday postcards.

Any camera will do, from simple disposable to complex digital. But for best results we suggest a wide angle lens equivalent to about 28 mm in 35 mm format, a telephoto of at least 100mm, and enough film or digital media and batteries for about 72 exposures, 200 or 400 speed. You should also consider black and white for some of the subjects. You must have a STURDY tripod. Digital owners should learn how to set the tungsten/incandescent white balance on their cameras. For film cameras, an 80A or 80B tungsten filter is recommended to take the yellowish cast out of your pictures made with daylight film under tungsten light.

Newly re-opened in 2002, the US Botanic Garden provides incredible picture-taking opportunities for the photographer who loves flowers and exotic plants.

The US Botanical Garden is putting on a special treat for the month of December. Capture the enchantment of the season with professional photographer E. David Luria as he guides you through the conservatory to photograph the Garden Express train exhibit- a model train that winds its way past miniature organic replicas of the Capitol, the Washington Monument, Fords Theatre, Capital Hill row houses and the Conservatory itself.

    Our itinerary will include

Bartholdi Park, with its famous statue designed by the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty, Auguste Bartholdi. Here we will get a good shot of the US Capitol, before heading into the Botanic Gardens to photograph a variety of magnificent floral and orchid displays and exotic plants as well as the special holiday display. We will make a complete circuit of the gardens, including the upper level which looks down on the tropical jungle below.

At each point on our safari David will review techniques of composition, exposure and lighting. Trained in Paris by a protégé of the famous French photographer, the late Henri Cartier Bresson, he places a great deal of emphasis on good composition, i.e. aiming the camera in the right direction and pushing the shutter button at just the right time! The main lesson on the safari is that great pictures are taken by photographers, not by cameras.

Any camera will do, from simple disposable to complex digital. But for best results we suggest a wide angle lens equivalent to about 28 mm in 35 mm format, a circular polarizing filter, a telephoto of at least 100mm, and enough film or digital media and batteries for about 72 exposures, 200 or 400 speed. You should also consider black and white for some of the subjects. No tripods are allowed on this safari due to space constraints.

    Instructor: Eliot Cohen
    Class Limit: 15 people

This class is an introduction to the techniques of the Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Elements editing programs, designed for those with a desire to learn how to enhance or edit their digital images. (No prior experience is necessary.)

It is very “hands-on”, every student has their own work station with a computer. The instructor networks all the computers so that everyone is working on the same image which the instructor supplies. As the class is limited to 15 students, attention can be given to everyone’s needs.

This class is for new users who have limited experience with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements.

    Topics Include:
    • Setting up your workspace - use of the file browser or Bridge
    • How to enhance digital files with cropping and straightening techniques
    • Understanding file size and resolution, making smaller files for email
    • Color balance and color correction - capability to enhance and adjust color
    • How to improve image detail and clarity using the Unsharp Mask filter
    • Contrast Control - explanation of dynamic range (tonal Levels) how to target black and white levels and to make adjustments in the computer
    • Exposure Control - how the meter responds, using shutter priority to control exposure, and EV settings for over/under exposure
    • How to use Histograms to improve exposure in the camera and reproduction of tone and color in print

    What to bring:
If you have a digital camera you may want to bring it with you as there is a brief shooting session after which some of the images may be shared and discussed.  A memory card, and extra battery and the instruction manual are also helpful to bring.

    Pre-requisites:
    • Sufficient familiarity with one’s camera to be able to use it independently
    • Comfort with basic computer skills such as locating, opening, & saving files

Class Cancellation Policy: Full credit towards another class will be awarded if cancellation notice is given more than 5 business days from the scheduled class. If there is no cancellation notice, or if it is given 5 business days or less prior to the scheduled class, no credit or refund will be given. Changes to reschedule a class will incur the full charge if notice is given less than 5 business days prior to the originally scheduled class.

    Instructor: Eliot Cohen
    Class Limit: 15 people

If there is no cancellation notice, or if it is given 5 business days or less prior to the scheduled class, no credit or refund will be given. Changes to reschedule a class will incur the full charge if notice is given less than 5 business days prior to the originally scheduled class.

Previously called,"Advanced Editing with Photoshop or Elements"

This workshop goes beyond the basic techniques of the Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Elements editing programs that were covered in the Editing with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements class. It covers more advanced tools using Layers and Selections.

It is “hands-on”, every student has their own work station with a computer. The instructor networks all the computers so that everyone is working on the same image which the instructor supplies. As the class is limited to 15 students; attention can be given to everyone’s needs.

    Topics include:
    • Selections - adjustments to tone and color as well as editing just the selected portion of an image
    • Layers - allowing you to work on one element of an image without disturbing the others.
    • Collage - for more creative images

    Pre-requisites:
    • Previously attended the Editing with Photoshop or Photoshop Elements class - If you haven’t attended that class but are familiar with the Photoshop workspace and the basic tools, please email penntraining@penncamera.com to discuss attending.

FYI: Free parking is available at the class location.  Metro does not have a stop within walking distance.
